Theology and Bioethics

Part of the book series: Philosophy and Medicine ((PHME,volume 20))

Abstract

In this essay I will seek to justify three claims: (1) that the field of medical ethics underwent a qualitative shift in the United States in the decade between 1965 and 1975; (2) that several thinkers interested in the relationship between religion and science and between religion and ethics contributed significantly to this shift; and (3) that two Catholic laymen, Daniel Callahan and André Hellegers, and one Protestant theologian, Paul Ramsey, were among the principal institutional and intellectual architects of the recent renaissance in medical ethics.
