Abstract

An experiment has been carried out to study the entrainment in two-layer stratified fluids in a rotating system, where turbulence for mixing is produced by an oscillating grid in the upper layer. Flow visualization by dye, aluminium powder, and shadow graphs reveals peculiar characteristics of turbulence in rotating stratified fluids: strong spike-like turbulence above the interface and weak thin filaments elongated downward just beneath the interface. It is found that rotation causes even the downward (reverse) entrainment, which is never observed in non-rotating stratified fluids.
