Abstract
The microwave scatterometer onboard SEASAT satellite was used to determine the wind field over the world’s oceans. The principle of measurement relies on the sensitivity of microwave radar backscatter to the capillary waves generated by surface wind. The purpose of this report is to estimate the magnitude of possible errors arising in the wind vector algorithm based on an empirical бo model involving the two-dimensional wave spectrum W(Kx,Ky.) for the sea surface. The problems for determining the precise wind vector seem to depend on the knowledge of a realistic expression for W(Kx,Ky) consistent with the mechanism of generation of wind waves. More specifically it will reguire: (1) the determination of an expression for the one-dimensional spectrum together with the availability of a Semi-Empirical or Pierson spectrum in the capillary wave range, (2) the establishment of a realistic two-dimensional wave dispersion law for the short gravity-capillary waves, (3) pertwbation of the wave pattern through wave-current interaction.
