Abstract

The argument to come is organized around two issues: the relation of a student at school or in higher education to the research process; and the place of history and philosophy of science in our intellectual economy. I hope to show that a particular way of construing history and philosophy of science (hereafter HPS) provides just the device needed to resolve one of the main problems in the pedagogy of the research process. Further, I hope to show by way of example that it was by the use of BPS conceived as science criticism that it has been possible successfully to revise and so to rescue the central social science of social psychology. I use this example to show how HPS can be used as part of the research process itself.
