Abstract
As the term implies, the process of ion exchange is the exchange of ions. In this context it is specifically the exchange of ions between a solid phase, the ion exchange matrix, and a liquid phase—generally, water. While most of the ion exchange processes apply to water treatment, it is not the only medium in which the ion exchange process can be applied. There are numerous applications where ion exchangers have been used to purify or catalyze reactions in mixed and nonaqueous solvents.
