Abstract

In this book we have tried to sum up the results of the most important studies of the living world of Baikal. Appraising these results as a whole, we feel entitled to maintain that at present Baikal is one of the most thoroughly studied great lakes of the world. All these achievements, however, are merely a stage on the way to a most comprehensive knowledge of the lake. The results of recent studies make possible the delineation of the basic problems and directions to be followed in further work, some of which are discussed below.
