Abstract
Intrauterine contraceptive devices (IU CDs) fall into three main categories, inert, chemically active and hormonally active. Uterine perforation, usually occurring at the time of insertion, occurs in approximately 1 in 1000 patients. The perforation may be virtually asymptomatic and. the device, particularly if copper coated, may, if left in the abdominal cavity, lead to peritoneal adhesions and intestinal obstruction: very rarely a device has been removed from the bladder or bowel.
