Abstract

Continental phytosociology on the one hand, and American and British ecology on the other, can be regarded as not merely two schools but as different scientific cultures (cf. Westhoff 1970, Doing 1970). By “culture” I mean here systems of interlinked values, interests, assumptions, and concepts, these linked in turn with practices that express and serve these underlying interests. Given such difference in depth between phytosociology, and the American ecology I represent, it is unreasonable to expect a simple fusion in agreement, despite an earlier suggestion of mine (Whittaker 1953).
