Abstract

Statistical approaches to plant ecology and phytosociology, usually referred to as „Quantitative Plant Ecology“ (Greig-Smith, 1957), have been reviewed several times (Goodall 1952, 1970; Lambert and Dale 1964; Kershaw 1964; Whittaker 1967; McIntosh 1967). These reviews may seem to imply that the more recent techniques are a radical break with the older methods and render many of the traditional approaches obsolete. In this paper, however, emphasis will be placed rather on the close connection between the newer methods and the aims and ideals of the earlier workers.
