Abstract
There is a tendency to spend a great deal of time and effort on preparation for the multiple choice and modified essay sections of this examination at the expense of the traditional essay questions. The TEQ carries marks equal to those awarded for the other two sections and for this reason, if for no other, an equal amount of thought and energy should be devoted to it. Although it now receives less emphasis at all stages of the medical school curriculum, and the contemporary candidate is therefore perhaps less practised in its presentation than were his predecessors, it remains one of the best methods of assessing the doctor’s ability to think logically, show his knowledge in its best possible light and present it clearly and succinctly.
