Abstract
There are two kinds of laboratory tests that are useful for the diagnosis and management of rheumatic fever: tests to detect if there has been a preceding streptococcal infection and tests to detect a systemic inflammatory state. Additional studies may be useful to exclude other diseases which can mimic rheumatic fever; these are discussed in the chapter on differential diagnosis.
