Auswirkungen der Saarbelastung auf die Speziesdiversität von Benthosbiozönosen und die Verweildauer Exponierter Organismen

The importance of bioindication by organisms and biocenoses for the evaluation of waters has been unquestioned since the basic works done at the beginning of this century. The number of the different methods and their revisions, however, illustrates the difficulties of an objective evaluation of the water state by means of indicator organisms whose valency is not sufficiently known. Just like the reaction type of individual organisms, changes of biocenoses have been considered as parameters for the indication of environmental changes.

On the example of the River Saar, investigations of the importance of the indicator properties of individual organisms and biocenoses are carried through by way of animal exposure tests and diversity analyses. These studies are based on the presentation of the importance of the present Saar pollution to area changes and the structure of mollusc populations.

In the section following the distribution limit of benthic biocenoses set by the discharge of the excessively polluted Rossel (industrial sewage and slurry), organisms have been exposed in the river as far as its mouth. In those sections of the Saar, where a benthic fauna exists, exposure tests are running on parallel lines with diversity analyses.

The interpretation of the results shows to be well in line with those of chemico-physical series measurement conducted in connection with exposure and diversity analyses.
