Abstract

The climate of the Pannonic region (Carpathian Basin and enclosed mountains of medium altitude) is under continental as well as Mediterranean influence. The continental influence is shown by relatively low precipitation and moderately cold winters, whereas a precipitation curve with two peaks, the higher one occuring in Mai or June, is evidence for a Mediterranean influence. Continental influences predominate in the northeastern part of the region, Mediterranean features in the southwest.

The distribution of plant species parallels the climate. According to ZÓLYOMI, plant geography of the Pannonic region is more in accordance with the eastern Balkans and the coastal regions of the Black Sea than with the steppe zone of Middle Russia. Outstanding in comparison with northwestern Middle Europe is an increase in deciduous tree species in connection with an increase in summer temperatures; the evergreen large shrubs Buxus sempervirens and Ilex aquifolium, on the other hand, are excluded by cold winters. Dominant grasses in the Pannonic region with a continental range of distribution reach in most cases the arid zone of Middle Germany, wheras grasses with a submediterranean range have their outposts often in the warm enclaves of Southern Germany.
