Abstract
The aim of this chapter is to provide a complete, if sparsely worded, introduction to the basic notions of syntax and quantification that we shall need for the developments to be undertaken in the subsequent chapters. With the possible exception of the semantic treatment of pronouns in sections 2.5 and 3 almost none of the ideas underlying the presentation are original. However, the formalization and the emphasis are quite unusual and are oriented towards the needs of the later chapters.
