Abstract
This chapter is meant as an introduction to some of the basic notions of the kind of syntax and semantics that we will be developing in the book. We attempt to point out how some of the linguistic concerns arising when we study natural language syntax surface again when we look at semantics from a linguistic point of view. The concerns we discuss are: (i) motivating analyses on the basis of the structure of natural languages (sections 1.2 and 2.2), (ii) the role of native speakers’ intuitions (sections 1.3 and 2.3) and (iii) the relationship of grammars to the mechanisms involved in speech production and understanding (sections 1.4 and 2.4).
