Abstract

In this review we shall discuss the equilibrium properties of the transition metal trichalcogenides MX3 (M = Ta, Nb, Hf, Zr, Ti; X = S, Se, Te) paying special attention to the conductors NbSe3 and TaS3, which exhibit incommensurate structural transitions. NbSe3 not only undergoes structural instabilities [1,2] but under pressure it also shows [3] BCS-like superconductivity. The question of properties, the coexistence and the competition of structural instabilities and superconductivity in the MX3 compounds [4] will be the main concern of the present paper.
