Medicine and the Control of Reproduction

Sexuality and Medicine

Part of the book series: Philosophy and Medicine ((PHME,volume 23))

Abstract

The development of technology makes it possible for us to make choices about reproduction which were not in our power a short time ago. New technologies for controlling fertility, for detecting genetic abnormalities, and for detecting fetal defects in utero raise the possibility of making choices about the quantity and quality of the next generation. This possibility forces on us questions not only about what decisions ought to be made but also about who should make them. This paper will examine the moral claims of prospective parents, health professionals, future generations, and the society in general to have a say or have their interests considered in such decisions.
