Summary

In the western Pan African domain, the Rokelides encompass a single low-grade ensialic supracrustal belt on the western margin of the Archaean cratonic nucleus, which suffered slight reactivation during the Pan African deformation and metamorphism of the belt. The Rokelides merge northwards with the Mauritanides. The Rokelide belt is believed to have been a rifted aulacogen that was deformed in the first of a series of plate collision events that culminated in the building of the Mauritanides. As yet, few mineral deposits of importance have been discovered in this part of the Pan African terrane in West Africa.
