Summary

The Quaternary should not be viewed in isolation but as a link with the more distant geological past. In many places, the present cycle of weathering and erosion began long ago, and is responsible for some important economic mineral deposits. The tectonic and magmatic effects of continued seafloor spreading and regional uplift are still felt as occasional earthquakes, and they have provided a number of mildly active and dormant volcanoes. A geological event without known precedent in this region is the meteorite impact that produced the crater now occupied by Lake Bosumtwi in Southern Ghana, and the tektites of the eastern Ivory Coast.
