Abstract

Atomic energy made its first unforgettable impact on world opinion in August, 1945, when the first atomic bomb virtually eradicated Hiroshima from the maps, and so it was that the military significance of this new source of energy remained in the forefront of public attention. Actually, almost ten more years were to pass before the general public became fully alive to the peaceful potentialities of atomics, although these were immediately realised by scientists and far-sighted statesmen.
