Summary
The major trend in Canada and the United States is towards continuous, high-speed finger-jointing processes for finger-jointing visually-graded lumber. A recent development in Canada is the “blow-dry” method of glueline heating, which permits all sizes to be made with either vertical or horizontal finger-joints, and also permits unseasoned lumber to be processed. Five existing Canadian plants and two now under construction are all based on this process.
Canada has developed special standards for finger-jointed, visually-graded lumber. These include a product standard and a separate standard on which quality assurance and product certification is based. Strength assurance is based on bending tests of the finger-joints, while durability assurance is based on delamination testing. In addition, finger-jointed lumber in the three highest stress grades is 100% proof-tested at 1.33 times the allowable design value.
