Abstract
Those scientists, who first developed the ancient conception of matter as consisting of separate particles in constant motion, were mainly concerned with gaseous bodies. Subsequently, however, these methods proved to be applicable to a much wider field of investigation. Permit me to elucidate this, after a short introduction, by a few examples.
