Abstract

Dr. van Veen asked me to add a chapter about the 1953 flood. Though two years have passed, the consequences of this flood continue to demand an excessive amount of energy from the Waterstaat engineers, therefore little time is left for anything else. But I cannot refuse the claims of this book and of those who have patiently waited for nearly two years for the new edition with its report of the flood and its consequent engineering plans for the future protection of the Netherlands.
