Abstract
The En lish devotional writings of Richard de Methley, a Carthusian monk of the Mount Grace Charterhouse in Yorkshire, follow the pattern of Hilton’s Scala Perfectionis and the works of Richard Rolle. Methley, whose surname was Furth, was born about 1450 in Methley, a village in the West Riding of Yorkshire. From his knowledge of theolgy and Latin, it is supposed that he attended either Oxford or Cambridge. In 1476 Methley was professed in the Carthusian order. At the time of his death in 1528 he held the office of vicar in the Yorkshire Charterhouse.
