Abstract
The old beast-epic Hystorie van Regnaert, a Low German prose tale based on.Æsop’s fable, was first printed, in 1479, by the Flemish printer Gerard Leeu. Caxton’s English translation, The hystorye of reynart the foxe (1481), is vigorously told with an occasional borrowing from the Dutch language, which he learned during his stay in Bruges.
