Abstract

The most comprehensive work on the discoveries and explorations in the New World was written by Peter Martyr d’Anghiera, historian and geographer, who was born in 1459 in Arona, Italy. Martyr’s career began in his native land where he served as secretary to prominent men, including Cardinal Ascanio Sforza. An enticing offer from the Count of Tendilla, a Spanish diplomat, lured Martyr in 1487 to Spain, where he did his greatest work as a military man, diplomat, priest, and author.
