Abstract

Due to a number of circumstances, inter-disciplinary research within the sphere of the social and human sciences has been far less abundant than similar research within the natural sciences, and this despite the fact that its great future potential has been widely recognized.

Having been commissioned by Unesco to undertake a study of common mechanisms and inter-disciplinary relations in the human sciences in connection with a report on present-day trends in this field, we are now presenting for the consideration of sociologists certain of the ideas which we shall be elaborating in that report.
