Abstract

Studies of human essential hypertension have shown that there is a strong genetic component to this disease, as reviewed in a previous chapter. Children whose parents have essential hypertension have a much greater than normal chance of having essential hypertension themselves as they reach adulthood. But, this statistical connection does not show us what gene or genes are involved or how the genetic information is conveyed to the physiological processes that ultimately influence blood pressure.
