Part of the book series: Physics and Chemistry of Materials with Low-Dimensional Structures ((PCMALS,volume 20))

Abstract

Experiments on high temperature superconductors in the decade following Bednorz and Muller’s discovery have produced a tremendously rich variety of physical behaviour. As we shall see in this short review, the magnetic excitations are no exception in this respect. The characterisation of the these excitations is motivated by a number of considerations. Firstly, electrons carry spin as well as a charge, thus measurement of the motion of the spins provides an image of the electronic correlations in these complex materials. Secondly, the failure of phonon-based theory to explain the high temperature superconductor phenomenon has led to the widely-held view that magnetic excitations are involved in the pairing attraction.
