Feasibility of All-Optical Computation by Second Harmonic Generated Holograms

Abstract

All-optical computation is shown to be working when boolean algebra operations are performed on optical bits encoded as amplitude modulations in two wavefronts that are made interact in a non-linear crystal endowed with second order non-linearity (β-BaB2O4). The sum-frequency interaction reconstructs a holographic image containing the outputs of the desired operations, and difference frequency also demonstrated to be effective. The experiments demonstrate the feasibility of a parallel half-adder and confirm the possibility to work with high density of data, since a nearly diffraction limited resolution can be easily achieved in the holographic image.
