Abstract

An account of the most relevant phenomena leading to the enhancement of the nonlinear optical response of liquid crystals is reported. The giant nonlinearity due to collective reorientation can be increased by two order of magnitude through dye-doping, leading to a nonlinear refractive index n2 of the order of 10-3 cm2/W. Recently this value has been overcome in in Methyl Red-doped liquid crystals where n2 > 1 cm2/W have been measured. We show that this extraordinarily large nonlinear response can be also induced by short pulse excitation.
