Abstract
The setting up of OECD’s Environment Committee in 1970 reflected growing awareness of the need to improve understanding of the interaction between economic and social development and the chains of natural processes that underlie life itself. The object of the Committee and the Directorate of the international secretariat that serves it is to help Governments make decisions on environmental policy. The main way in which this task is undertaken is by assessing the damage inflicted by different forms of pollution on the environment and by assessing the costs of different methods of combating it.
