The Role of the Peripheral Arterial Chemoreceptors in the Cardiovascular Responses of the Cat to Acute Systemic Hypoxia

  • Chapter
Chemoreceptors in Respiratory Control

Abstract

The cardiopulmonary system transports oxygen to the tissues of an organism. The fundamental questions arise, then, How does the cardiopulmonary system respond to an acute hypoxic challenge? What role do the peripheral arterial chemoreceptors play in the cardiovascular response to acute systemic hypoxia? Our hypothesis was that the general vascular responses and the response of the vascular resistances of specific organs to acute systemic hypoxaemia would be different depending upon how many and which chemoreceptors were involved.
