Abstract

Since the acetylcholine (Ach) hypothesis was postulated in 1938 to explain the chemotransduction processes of the carotid body (c.b.) (Schwieler and Wright, 1938), several studies on content, synthesis, release and inactivation of this possible neurotransmitter in the c.b. have appeared. In spite of this data, Ach function in the c.b. is confusing and its physiological amounts are not clearly established. The Ach levels measured in c.b. tissue by pyrolysis gas chromatography and mass spectometry (Fidone et al. 1977) contrast with those values suggested by bioassays (Eyzaguirre et al., 1965: Jones, 1975). Such different observations do not help to clarify the role of Ach in the sensory transduction of this receptor.
