Abstract

Testicular function is controlled by a complex, interacting system including the extrahypothalamic central nervous system, the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland and the gonads. Luteinizing hormone (LH) by interacting with specific receptors, is the main factor which regulates Leydig cell steroidogenesis while follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) controls Sertoli cell function. In turn, sex steroids produced by Leydig cells and the non-sex steroid factors of Sertoli cells modulate the peripheral concentrations of gonadotrophins. Recently, evidence has accumulated to indicate that many other hormones—including prolactin, LHRH, oestradiol, androgens, epidermal growth factor, neurohypophyseal hormones and catecholamines—can play a potential role in the regulation of Leydig cell function (reviewed in references 1 and 2). In addition, recent studies also suggest the existence of an important interaction between Leydig cells and the adjacent tubular cells resulting in the regulation of both Leydig and Sertoli cell functions.
