Abstract

Lymphocytes are small cells (8–12μ in diameter) with relatively large nuclei. They have the capacity to circulate throughout the body in both blood and extracellular fluid which is important, as they play a vital role in the defence of the body against infection. Although other cells, such as neutrophils, may be more aggressive in destroying antigens, lymphocytes have a particular function because they are the only cells which have the ability to recognise that an antigen is foreign and not part of the host tissue.
