Abstract

A wide variety of things can be the subject of a lawsuit, for which the term is hata or sihataon, the matter that is to be discussed. When a woman is the subject of a dispute, be it over a betrothal, a marriage. or the conduct of a wife or a daughter, the term used is hata boru; when it is over land, the term is hata tano; over damage caused by fire, or over arson, it is hata surbu; over the destruction of the harvest by cattle, hata gagat-gagat; over breaking off a betrothal, or a divorce, hata sirang; over debts, hata singir, and so on. The case itself is called parhataon, and the course of the suit is termed ruhut ni parhataon.
