Abstract
George the Fifth, who for the last quarter century seemed to symbolize Britain’s attempt to adjust her tradition to the cold uncertainty following the Great War, died on January 20, 1936. Several days later as the funeral cortège was proceeding to Westminster Hall the caisson carrying the King’s body received a sudden jolt which caused a cross on the imperial crown to fall from the coffin. Some people regarded this as a bad omen.
