Abstract
The Napoleons made the second of December a banner day in French history. On this day in 1804, Napoleon Bonaparte crowned himself Napoleon I, Emperor of the French. The first anniversary of this coronation he celebrated by one of his most brilliant military triumphs, the battle of Austerlitz. Thus December the Second for Louis Napoleon was already a day of double anniversary celebration, a time for the memory of the first coronation and of the victory over the Austrians and Russians at Austerlitz in 1805. But Louis was to add two more significant events to the roster of reasons for remembering December 2 — the coup d’état in 1851 and the foundation by decree of the Second Empire on December 2, 1852.
