Abstract
After graduating from Harvard, in 1831, at the age of seventeen, Motley was sent abroad to Germany where it was hoped he would pursue the study of German and the Civil Law. His first voyage across the Atlantic proved to be a rough one, the journey lasting fifty days, during which time the steamer was tossed and turned by an unremitting series of rain and wind storms. However, with the unexpected duration of the voyage Motley found that he had ample time for some study; and he had the good fortune to be able to act as an interpreter between the Captain of the vessel and a German pilot who spoke very little English.
