The Transformation of Lermontov

  • Chapter
Soviet Historical Drama

Abstract

With the conclusion of the war, the flood of historical patriotic plays came to an abrupt halt. If in the preceding years, Stalin had wanted to inspire patriotism in the average Russian by showing him heroic deeds of prerevolutionary military leaders, he now felt it necessary to shift the emphasis to glorification of the party—a step which may have been partially designed to prevent the emergence of a Napoleon from the powerful and popular armed forces. Scholars realized that a new line on historiography was in the making when in June, 1945, Istoricheskii zhurnal (Historical Magazine) suspended publication, to be later replaced by Voprosy istorii (Problems of History), with a shift in editors. From articles in the early issues, it became clear that dialectical materialism would again be applied to the past (more or less as in the pre-1934 period).1
