Abstract
A review of the first hundred years of Rembrandt criticism has shown that the artist had an appreciative audience from the time Aernout van Buchell took brief notice of the young painter until Arnold Houbraken wrote his lengthy biography. Rembrandt’s late as well as his early works met approval and with very few exceptions 17th and 18th century critics accrpted him as a serious history painter and applauded his portraits, etchings and drawings.
