The Spanish Background

  • Chapter
Prelude to War

Abstract

In order to set the stage for the drama which was played out in the Spanish peninsula for two and a half years, and which involved all the major European powers both in its plot and its action, it is necessary to grasp the economic, social and political conditions existing in Spain before discussing the events which led up to the revolt of the Spanish army against the Republican Government in July, 1936.

“L’Espagne est un des pays les plus difficiles à connaître et à comprendre pour ceux qui n’y ont pas longtemps residé1).”
