Abstract
This Javanese author is no more representative of the Angkatan 45 than Idrus, if one uses a formal classification. He neither served on the editorial boards of publications associated with the forty-fivers, nor was he an active participant in the literary discussions of the period which followed on from 1945. But when one takes into account his literary works from the period under discussion, there can be no doubt that he has much in common with the forty-fivers. As it is scarcely open to dispute that he is the most important prose-writer of this period, not only because of the wide compass of his creative work, but especially because of the quality of his work, unique in this generation, it would seem to be appropriate from all points of view to give a full discussion of his most outstanding writings.
