Abstract
The first good example of a novel dealing with this clash of cultures is Sitti Nurbaja, written by Marah Rusli in 1922. The author was bom in Padang in 1889 (not in 1898 as several sources say), qualified as a veterinary surgeon, spent a few years on the island of Sumbawa, and worked as a veterinary surgeon in Semarang for the greater part of his life. After his first novel he remained silent for a long time; however, after his retirement he published two other books which will be mentioned in the second part of the present study. From his biography as given by Zuber Usman it is obvious how much Marah Rusli suffered in his personal life from the demands which traditional society and his own family made upon him.86
