Abstract
Most impressive is St. Takdir Alisjahbana’s long essay on Bahasa Indonesia. This, although it was a, first effort, has not been surpassed as an attempt to relate the history of the language problem in Indonesia from an Indonesian point of view, and the coming into’ being of the national ideal embodied in Bahasa Indonesia. Furthermore, the essay deals with a number of current and prospective problems connected with the realization of that ideal. A short synopsis of this article, republished after the war in a collection of essays by Takdir, may not be out of place here.54
