Abstract

Kraus’s very first aim in establishing Die Fackel was to fight the press, to undermine public confidence in it, and to undo the damage it was currently doing. If possible, his hatred against the press increased as time went on, but as early as the first Fackel in April 1899, he had already set down his program as a battle against “die periodisch erscheinenden Dummheiten and Lächer­lichkeiten unseres politischen, gesellschaftlichen and literarischen Lebens... ” 1
