Abstract

The Portuguese economy — the rate of growth of which has exceeded the average for the industrialized countries since 1953 — continues to be characterized by the high proportion of the country’s labour force engaged in the agricultural sector notwithstanding the development of industry and services, which are now expanding at a much higher rate than are the primary activities.
