Implementation of the Treaty Establishing the European Economic Community I. Institutions and Issues

  • Alan David Robinson

The Treaty establishing the European Economic Community came into force on i January, 1958. In the following three years developments in the European Economic Community have had a profound effect upon the political activities of Dutch organised agriculture on international issues. In particular, there has been a marked increase in the number of channels and in the intensity of political activities. The main factors behind this increase appear to have been the institutional arrangements set up in accordance with the Treaty and the policy pursued in the implementation of the Treaty by the Commission and the Council of Ministers, particularly in the fields of the expansion of the intra-Community trade in agricultural products and the formulation of proposals for the establishment and execution of a common European agricultural policy. It is proposed in this chapter to look briefly at the institutional arrangements and at the policy issues which stimulated the political activities of Dutch organised agriculture.
