Abstract

One of the oldest passions of mankind is the building of towers: a passion, for ever looked upon as an act of pride and presumption, which inevitably evoked punishment. Old myths and legends speak, with mystic awe, of high towers: does not the Bible itself tell of the tower of Babel, whose highest point was to reach into the heavens — had not God called a halt to this arrogance, and punished mankind for it? An important historic fact is hidden behind this biblical story, in many ways so penetrating in its psychology.
